Central Park Attractions: Lasker Rink
Lasker Rink in Central Park opened in 1966. The rink is located between the Loch and the Harlem Meer, just south of the Farmers’ Gate entrance. Local New York residents tend to prefer this location over Wollman Rink because it is less expensive and less crowded. During winter, public skating and ice hockey are the main attractions. In the summer, the rink is transformed into a public swimming pool.
Lasker Rink in Central Park: Opening and Skating Programs
Lasker opens for skating in late October of every year. Not only is it available for public skating, but people can also take lessons at the rink. The rink is currently set up to be two rinks in one. Each of the rinks are 195 by 65 feet, which is just a little smaller than a standard hockey rink. Artificial refrigeration keeps the ice solid.
Lasker Rink offers a number of programs throughout the fall and winter:
-
Adult hockey leagues play four-on-four hockey games with co-ed teams separated by skill level.
-
Ice Hockey in Harlem offers instruction from volunteer coaches.
-
A Special Hockey International league plays on the rink as well.
-
A number of private schools use the rink for hockey activities, too.
