The Central Park Zoo is a 6.5-acre zoo located in the heart of Central Park in the middle of New York City. Beginning as a menagerie in the 1860s, it originally housed only a few animals before receiving its charter in 1864 and officially becoming the second publicly owned zoo in the United States. More than 250 animal donations between 1864 and 1865 helped to build the zoo into what it is today. The three exhibit areas include animals from temperate, tropical, and polar regions of the world and feature an indoor rainforest and even a penguin house!
